I am a reporter, journalism instructor, librarian and information specialist whose chief interest is examining efficient ways of searching and retrieving information.

I never imagined I would put these skills to use in a personal way. When diagnosed with breast cancer in 2001, I sought to arm myself with knowledge by combing print materials and Web sites and by contacting organizations to find the most up-to-date procedures and treatments. (Read more at My Story.)

Along the way, I found some invaluable resources as well as some shady information, but most of all, discovered that there was no central place offering south-central Indiana resources.

In Breast Cancer: FYI, I hope to offer these resources as well as pointers to some of the most useful Web sites for various aspects of this disease. I have chosen these sites based on my own experience, as well as have used my expertise as an information professional, to cull them from a crowded field of sites.

Breast Cancer FYI.org is wholly owned and operated by me, Gena Asher. I do not accept advertising, donations or endorsements from anyone or from any organization.

How I collect news:

As a reporter, I get all my news and information from local sources, usually by talking to organizers by phone or in person. I select links to credible news posted on other sites, as listed on News and Archives pages.

I sift through many sites and publications to find links and information worthy enough to pass on to BC:FYI readers.

Privacy:

There is a counter on this site, but I do not collect any information nor does this site plant cookies or other trackers.

Free Find provides search services and sends me a listing each week of the words people are using in the search engine. It is strictly a listing of key words with no identifying info (such as e-mail addresses). From the list, I can decide if I need to include more articles about a certain topic.

Privacy on the Web and in medical matters is of utmost importance. BC:FYI never will participate in any venture or methodology that compromisers readers' privacy. Anyone who emails BC:FYI to get help in searching for information or with simple questions or comments may rest assured that this contact will be guarded and kept confidential. Both journalists and librarians defend privacy in their daily jobs, and I am affiliated with both these professions.

Standards:

This site also has won several awards for content and design. The site also complies with the standards set forth by the Health on the Net organization dedicated to preserving trustworthy health information at online sources.
